One of my all time favourite authors is Max Lucado. In his book, Just Like Jesus, he writes something amazing: “God accepts you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you as you are.”
When you come to Christ, you come with a whole bag load; a messy past. There are many things in your past that you regret ever happened. Things that you embarrassed about. Things that you wouldn’t want anybody else to find out. You know very well that you did wrong or are doing wrong right now and these things weigh on you so heavily. The guilt or the anxiety of one day it all coming to light or somebody finding out. This is where the beauty of God’s forgiveness comes in.
For God, it doesn’t matter what you did or who you were. God is willing to throw that all away into the garbage and give you a fresh start! It doesn’t matter how horrible you think the sin is or how terrible of a deed you have done, God’s grace supersedes all of that. The lyrics of the song ‘Amazing Grace’ have been sung by thousands of artists and have touched so many lives. It says: “Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found. Was blind but now I see.” The man who wrote these lyrics was: John Newton. He was the captain of a slave ship. He used to treat people like cattle; lower than animals. He was a murderer and a torturer. One day his ship was in a heavy hurricane and he cried out to God to spare his life. The storm had passed and from that moment on his life was never the same. He met Christ, and God was willing to pardon him all of the things that he had done in his life. That’s why he wrote the song: ‘Amazing Grace’. He was amazed that God was willing to forgive and forget his sins just like that! After all that he had done, God was offering him a new life.
My friend, God is faithful. It doesn’t matter how many times you have failed or will fail. He can and He is willing to forgive you as well. It doesn’t matter what happened, God wants to take that load of your back. Would you come to Him today and ask for His forgiveness?
Just pray and confess your sins openly to God right now. Then ask Him to forgive you and purify you of all those sins. Now ask Him to give you the strength to live a life that is pleasing to Him; to give you the strength to hold up His standards day by day. Afterwards, trust that God has heard you and that He has already forgiven you. The guilt, the shame, the anxiety, the stress and all of the memories are gone! Believe it!
